Waiting. It’s what many of us do during Hurricane season. Praying, hoping, wishing, and waiting.
As I watched the weather channel these last two days and checked out the photos that where posted via Facebook, my heart like many who live in the South, broke for our neighbors, our brothers, our land, our states.
My attention was brought to a status update by some one who doesn’t live here, or anywhere close to the danger a hurricane brings. The status was a complaint about how if it was so bad, then we all should just move. I couldn’t help but smile. You see if this person had understood from a southern point of view, the status would have read a little something like this;
“So here comes another hurricane. I pray we all survive and the damage is slight, but I rest my head tonight knowing that no matter what Isaac brings, we will rebuild. We will survive. We will conquer, because here in the south, we don’t know how to quit, and so arm in arm with strangers who become family through the struggles we face, we will stand strong. We will live. We will fight for our way of life and we will not RUN.”
Move indeed. Maybe temporarily, but there just isn’t any other place for us to exist where our roots run so deep and the hardship brings us closer.
I pray the person who wrote the post never has to face a hardship like this, because if they do, with that attitude, I am afraid they will find themselves failing miserably at surviving it with grace of any kind.
Mean while, the water may rise, but we all know it will recede and on the other side of this dreary time, the sun still shines and our hope, love, life, and southern hospitality will survive……………….well unless your a hurricane…………then sha sugar, your just not welcome at all.
